An Analysis of the Distinctions of the Body and the Soul in the Philosophy of Socrates This philosophical study will define the distinctions of the body and the soul as defined in the philosophy of Socrates. In the Phaedo, Socrates defines the important distinction between the †visible† body and the â€Å"invisible† substance of the soul. Socrates defines the temporal and changing nature of the visible body, which is impermanent. In contrast to this view, the soul is a higher form of incomposite energy that is always constant and never changing. These differences define the immortality of the soul in relation to the temporal form of the body. Socrates is arguing in favor of the immortality of the soul, which can shed different â€Å"bodies† in a â€Å"composite† interrelationship. This is one reason why Socrates believes in the Afterlife during his trial, as defined in the dialogue brought forth in The Apology. In essence, an analysis of the distinctions of the body and the soul will be analyzed in this evaluation of the philosophy of Socrates. Socrates defines the body as being a â€Å"visible† and vulnerable to change and decay. The body defines the visible presentation of existence, which defines the physical or material death/decay of the flesh in terms in an ever-changing environment. In this manner, Socrates describes the body in terms of the temporal nature of its existence: â€Å"Body, in turn, is most similar to what’s human and deathbound† (Plato â€Å"Phaedo† 80b).
